MASTERCLASS WORKSHOP IN DETAIL
FUN FATALE festival 2020
BODY - HARNESS - MOVEMENT - PRACTICE
with ELEONORA DALL`ASTA
It is a workshop where we learn how to build and create a movement practice from architectural or natural spaces and how to use harnesses to move through the space and also be moved.
This practice is divided in three sections:
1. (1hour) A floor section that will let us know each other, prepare our bodies physically and introducing improvisation exercises for movement research, always having in mind the idea in which “there is no movement more important than other” -
2. (1hour and a half) An aerial harness section based on the current harness technique (suspension/floor/wall) and a movement harness practice in which our bodies will explore different level of actions like asymmetry, oppositions, inversions, continuity and instant composition. In this section we will also introduce the concept of Counter-Balance, with bodies and objects.
3. (1hour and a half) The third section will be on site, and here the aim is to find circus and aerial spaces where they are not supposed to be or where we imagine them according to a given space. We will work having in mind the concept of suspension, counter-balance and the verb “to adapt”, we will adapt to the space and inhabit it with our aerial and circus bodies.
The Floor practice: Is based on alignment and raw movement, breeding and the contemplation of the body with all its possibilities. This practice includes some yoga technique, basic principles of floor technique and my own research about movement through improvisation visualizing the shapes and matter that is in a particular space and creating instant movement through imaginary planes, motion script, speed and the “abandon state”.
In this way the body moves around without thinking too much and without losing “his own voice”; based on a constant improvisation where nothing is wrong, nothing is forced and where the “best movement” doesn`t exist.
The Aerial Practice (suspended in a harness without wall): Aerial practice comes from the floor practice but especially in a harness situation the work consists on exercises where people improvise movement but also where a glimpse of the basic technique is taken into consideration.
While working with suspension and harnesses, is pertinent to know about Spirals, Rotations, Oppositions, Swings, Momentum, Waves, Planes, Qualities and Speed. Those are human’s patterns of movement that people do without knowing in their daily life, no matter this, in a suspended situation the space and perception change.
Practicing this together with improvisational exercises in the air is the basis to build up a strong and open body. There is a reason why this method is undertaken on full “suspended” situation without any wall or floor or nothing; and this is because if a body can manage itself through nothing than he can work in any suspended situation.
Suspension and Objects:
The work with suspension and objects is made by various components. It is about learning. On this basis is significant to understand what is a counter-balance with objects on many levels.
There are different kinds of counterbalances depending on weights and also different ways to be suspended with an object. In this process is important which objects we choose because we will begin a movement dialogue with them.
Key words are sensing, perceiving, listening and responding. Another important word is “imagery”, this is how reality and the unconscious come together, is not something that we know prior to the suspension, we know about it while we are in a suspended action with objects.
This last step will sculpt some very strong images that will be the white canvas to build a performative action later on.
Requirements for students: Desire to move in the space with an open mind and curiosity. Experience in vertical or harness dance is not needed but if they have some is good (students needs to have circus and/or movement experience, preferably aerial experience).
Each student needs a “gri gri” a “carabiner” and a “harness”, they also need 1 ascender every 2 people. (the festival can provide some material)
Students needs to have sport shoes to bring to the workshop. They need to wear socks, long sport trousers and long sleeve t-shirt.
